05 STS fog lamp bulb replacement

Post by kevm14 »

I decided to replace both bulbs since access was good since I was doing the headlight. The driver's side bulb was working but I replaced it anyway. I bought Wagner H3 long life bulbs(55W).

I did not look up the procedure. But for the driver's side, the fog/DRL housing was exposed anyway since I was doing the headlight. Simply twist the lower cover counter clockwise and there's the bulb. It has a wire spring retainer and plugs in with a single spade. It grounds through the housing. I like this style better than the SRX which uses 6 small torx screws to remove the entire rear cover.

Then I did the passenger side which was burned out. I left this side of the front bumper attached and only had to remove the front wheel house. Not really that hard actually.

Oddly there were some small differences with the passenger light. First, the O-ring on the cover was red instead of black. Then I noticed the bulb retainer was actually a different design. Still a wire spring but totally different geometry. Same bulb. Very odd. Maybe one of these housings was replaced and one is a second design.

Wider shot of the job. Again, that front wheel house comes out and you have plenty of access. Oh, have to remove the tire of course...but still easier than the headlight.

Testing the new fog lights. The headlight was still drying so it is not shown in this pic.
