Power out 5:40pm 7/3

Post by kevm14 »

Power went out last night, and a second later I heard the transformer fuse blow (sound travels slower). So I knew it was local and would take a crew rolling into my neighborhood to fix it.

Reported it and eventually it said it effects 15 customers. Great.

Decided to change the oil on the generator to my Delo 400 SAE30. I had plans to change to that but never got around to it. So I did it last night.

Had trouble starting it and then I realized I hadn't turned the fuel back on. Whoops. Did that and it fired up.

I analyzed my window A/C situation and decided I could run the dining room A/C (12,000 BTU) and our master bed A/C (8,000). So I did. I did see some heavy loads at one point, as much as like 90%. Maybe the well pump kicked on. Also had the TV, lights, two refrigerators. I did turn our other upstairs bedroom A/C on toward the end which is like a 6,000 BTU or so. It held it. It wasn't hot out but it was extremely damp so it was nice to have continuous humidity removal even though I'm sure we could have just done without them for the short outage. I wanted to experiment because this is the first time we lost power in A/C season that I can recall.

Random shots of frequency and voltage. Considering it is an old engine and unregulated, I think it did a pretty damn good job. I would love to have monitoring of each phase voltage and amps. At least I can monitor volts and engine RPM from inside with my Kill-a-Watt (frequency).

I think I started it around 6:15pm and shut it down at 8:05 even though I guess power was restored at 7:07 according to an e-mail I received. My PowerBack is not working at all. I may want to look into that or just replace it.

Anyway so I guess I ran it for a little under 2 hours. I did notice a little oil consumption but I'd like to run it more to really get a feel. I might try that Restore stuff or whatever it is that Project Farm found to actually work to increase compression and help ring sealing.
