Well water filter

Post by kevm14 »

I need to do this so I will put a placeholder here. While I was at Lowes I noticed they had a few whole house water filters. They also had this filter compatibility chart.

I think what I want is the larger 4.5" unit and maybe at 5 micron instead of 20/25/35 micron. If the 5 micron clogged too frequently I could drop to something bigger. Also, I could do a sequential filter, starting with a 25 and ending with a 5. I think that's overkill. I feel like most houses around here probably run the smaller 2.5" filter so going with the big 4.5" should last a while longer.

I was worried about pressure drop also so one of these large 15 GPM units would probably solve that (and again, last longer between filter changes).

That one is huge.

Filters are 4.5" x 20" long. They also make one with 10" long filters. Still rated for 15 GPM.

That's probably more like it.

This is more of a standard one that most people have. Only rated for 4 GPM. Which is probably enough for most home purposes.

I just like the extra capacity of the huge one. The only downside to the large one is it's bigger and more expensive. Less pressure drop and longer filter life is more important to me. I think the big ones take a 1" fitting so I'd have to adapt that as well.

So I still like the 4.5" diameter ones. But not sure if I need the 10" or 20" long ones. This iSpring one is designed for well water and filters iron and manganese in 2 stages, with the first stage being 5 micron. Pretty sweet. Though I'm not sure we have an iron or manganese problem based on a test from 2016. Maybe it's time for another water test. Anyway, the 10" model is good for 50,000 gallons and the 20" says 100,000 gallons. I suppose all I need is a basic sediment filter but of course I have to over-engineer for best results.
