It has a long way to go but I've heard you can have fun, light conversations with it.

At best, "AI" can emulate how we think our brains can work (since its just computers running our code). If there is ever a "digital intelligence", it will be as different from our "intelligence" as an ant colony is. Are we (humans) so arrogant to think that that some "digital intelligence" will definitely resemble our own, as if we are the pinnacle example of intelligence in this universe?
I think the fear is that somehow, we will get AI so good, that computers will end up programming themselves (machine learning) to be "smarter" than us, not just as good.

Also, yes there are projects that are attempting to process info like humans do, and learn:

I agree things are still in the early stages, but I disagree it is stupid to have discussions.

That fear is irrational now. We can't write sufficiency complex software that works correctly for any reasonable amount of time now (see: all modern computing platforms), there is no way we can write instructions for a machine to write complex instructions for another machine successfully in the near future (or ever?).

Remember, its a digital approximation of how humans process information. Modern computers are completely deterministic. Aside from the occasional cosmic ray messing things up, a computer in a given state given the same set of inputs will always end up in the same state. The same can not be said for a human.

You can do some interesting things with FPGAs to essentially build ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) to perform a specific set of calculations more efficiently (multiple definitions) than a general purpose processor (x86), but its still based on the same underlying technology: the transistor. Same thing for GPUs.

This is interesting. They basically say that the computer wasn't programmed on how to play the game, it had to learn from scratch.

Not exactly. It was "trained" (strategy techniques) by playing against itself. They would have had to program the bot with knowledge of the basic mechanics and interfaces of the game.

I am interested to see how their 5-AI team play goes. I wonder if the current bot can play any character class or only understands a specific one. The characters in Dota2 are very different form each other (movement, attacks, abilities, etc...) and the strategies you would use to play them are different as well.
