04 E55 AMG: Add Bluetooth phone connection

Sometimes repairing the stock system is ill-advised but you can do it

Looks like I can add Bluetooth and it should be pretty much a factory integration which is pretty awesome. It has steering wheel buttons to accept and end calls for example. Maybe I could even dial through the ancient looking dial pad on the dash.

Requires this part: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-04-W2 ... SwV49ey8IQ

Part 67875855
And has to be coded to accept it at a dealer. Or by me if I had the Star computer system. Basically it just tells the car it has a phone. The module interfaces with the car through all the normal things and this is actually a Mercedes thing (made by Motorola). If I am lucky it will display full caller ID on the dash and maybe even the center speedo display. Now that would be something.

It is also possible that it will just work if the car has been previously coded with a phone. Or factory coded. So maybe I'll just try it.

Installation video. Haven't watched.

Ordered the part from eBay. $203.25. At least I can make this stupid nav-less COMAND system do something useful for me...

Yup.

Plugged in, held button to initiate pairing, my phone found the MB Phone, I entered the standard MB USA PIN (62872, yes, about the only time I have EVER seen a real PIN on a BT device because....Mercedes), and it connected and livened up the COMAND display with phone stuff. It did not seem to pull over my contacts automatically though maybe it would have if I waited. My phone did not say like "permission to send contact info" so I assumed it wasn't going to happen. So I simply sent ALL of my contacts to the car using the standard phone interface and it worked. They are all there now. The thing I realized is maybe I can also do this in my STS - I had been living without caller ID in that car but maybe I just needed to send them over....ugh.

Anyway this is pretty cool. I haven't tried a call yet but it seems to be working from what I can see. There is also an SMS button but it is grayed out. Maybe something happens if I get a text? That would be amazing but I kind of doubt it.

Received a call from Dan's as I was on my way to pick up takeout. It rang through the screen and I answered by pressing the answer button on the steering wheel. Worked perfectly!! So happy with this.
