Accord transmission fluid change

Post by Adam »

The forums (not this one) say doing a drain and fill really smooths out the shifter action. On top of that, upgrading to GM Synchromesh with friction modifier fluid is supposed to improve it even more. Lets find out.

I bought these:

Step one: jack up your car.

Once you remove the driver's front wheel, you can see the drain and fill holes. They are a little hard to capture on film in one shot as the strut is in the way. See below.

The service is as easy as drain, then add 2 quarts of new fluid. The drain and fill plugs use crush washers. The drain is the same 14mm as the oil pan drain plug. The fill is the same 20mm as the PCV valve. Torque to 29 lb-ft or whatever you are able to if you can't get your torque wrench in there.

A funnel with enough flexible tube will allow you to fill it without issues. It should just be starting to come out of the fill hole when it is full (2 qts).

Does it shift like a racecar? No. Is it a "night and day" improvement? No. It's better than it was, though. The downshift action is a bit smoother. It still doesn't feel great making the 1-2 shift at redline, but it's better than before. Not sure if this is a rod or cable shifter, maybe there are some bushings that can be replaced or linkage that can be tightened up. That sounds like a job for probably never.
