The 1990s brought a solution to both of the aforementioned challenges when automakers developed catalytic converters which were integrated into exhaust manifold assemblies. Early adopters of these space-saving integrated exhaust manifolds were mostly Japanese and European automakers who fitted them to smaller 4- and 5-cylinder inline engines.
Quick light-up time and smooth engine performance generated by this style of catalytic converter made them fast favorites of automakers from all over the globe. Soon, integrated exhaust manifolds were fitted to many larger inline-6, V6, and V8 engines as well. Fast forward to today, with our even stricter pollution standards, and these integrated exhaust manifolds are standard equipment on almost every new car and truck sold in the United States.
Random example: a 2002 Civic has a manifold integrated cat. Also a 2001 Infiniti QX4 (Pathfinder). I assure you Cadillac did not invent this.
In fact, that QX4 thread I found was from 2009. He had to replace his cats at 144k and only 8 years old.
I didn't think they did, I just don't like it. I have never replaced a manifold. I have replaced multiple cats. It is just cheaper to replace a cat vice a cat/manifold. I think cats are far more likely to fail than manifolds, so having to replace the manifold is kind of a waste. I am not saying it is a good time, but soaking with PB Blast a few times definitely helped.
it hasnt been hacked by tuners (ie hptuners, westers garage, etc)
in late 06 they switched to the current PCM used in the V8 cars
Goddamnit! I'm guessing they didn't have an ECM that could handle the Northstar LH2 until late 2006. So it got something bespoke until then. Lucky me. It's not that it cannot be hacked, just that it is likely not worth it for tuning software companies.
I added 12 more ounces of MMO to my mostly full tank. Recommended does is 8 oz in 20 gallons. So I put in maybe 60% more. Really interested if this did something to the cat. I'd like to think it would be temporary until something burns off. I just like living on the edge.
