I mean the bike is 25 years old and has been through some things. Basically the freehub sticks and tries to turn the pedals but the tension comes from the bottom (as opposed to pedaling where it is along the top) so it stretches the derailleur and gets all wonky. Found a perfect video that I intend to mirror and see if I can free it up.

If it is mechanically failed then I will attempt to ID the freehub and buy one. Sounds like a plan.
Trek 7000SHX freehub sticking
Re: Trek 7000SHX freehub sticking
This is my axle. Hopefully I don't need new bearings as that is just another thing to order and wait for. They may be 1/4".
I don't think the axle bearings have anything to do with my freehub issues. I think the issue is entirely within the freehub and has to do with the pawls. I guess it could be rusted in there and soaking in mineral spirits won't fix an issue like that. We'll see. Still need to remove it so I can get a part number and order the right thing.
I ordered:
Finish Line 1-Step Bicycle Chain Cleaner & Lubricant 4oz Squeeze Bottle
Finish Line Premium Grease made with Teflon Fluoropolymer, 3.5 Ounce
Park Tool SR-12.2 Sprocket Remover/Chain Whip for 7- to 12-Speed Bicycle Cassettes
Park Tool FR-5.2G Cassette Lockring Tool with Guide Pin 5 mm
Dumonde Tech Freehub Oil One Color, 1 oz.
About $72 into that. The freehub could be quite cheap but want to see if I can free up mine first.

Exactly my situation except I won't have to file the spacer. My rear gears are separate so no rivets. Looks like it will work just fine.
