Water in basement

Sinks, showers, pipes - usually pertaining to water or sewage. So don't mix them up.

Water in basement

Post by kevm14 »

Had water in basement in Jan. Actually had to vacuum it out. I identified several possibilities and addressed them:

- Some vent on the siding was letting in water and soaking the sheathing and sill plate. I have a few pics of the fix that I'll post.

- Downspout in the rear of the house may have caused water to pool at the back of my foundation under my deck area. I just extended the outlet with a length of downspout.

- Water from downspout in front of house flowed back toward the side of the house and into a crack in the foundation under the septic outlet pipe. This MIGHT be the biggest issue and I also fixed it. First I fixed it temporarily, then permanently (hopefully).

These are in reverse order.

This was the temporary fix. And it seemed to work. Addressing the grade would also be a good idea but this seemed to work by itself. 100 feet of 4" drain pipe. I bought the non-perforated kind after deliberating.

And the permanent fix. Burying it.

I woke up this morning with no plan except to drive to Taylor Rental and simply inquire about my options and costs. Decided to go with the truck just in case and I came home with a trencher. My other option was this Takeuchi mini-excavator with a 12" bucket.

This was fast and satisfying to use. The width it made was perfect for the 4" drain pipe. It has a depth capacity of 36" but I probably was more like 1 foot and less in a few places (like on top of the septic tank). I rented it for half a day at like $230 and was done in half the time or less. What's in the wheelbarrow is what it picked up just trenching for 75 feet no more than 12" down. My soil is rocky. Or you might say, stony.
