Cap for the Ram

Picking up the truck this Friday and I already started my search for a cap. My brother in law said I can have the cap from his 01 GMC Sierra 2500HD but according to Cap City, there is no cross-compatibility. I probably should look more (and measure) so I don't miss a satisfactory option. Anyway, Cap City has no used caps in stock for the Ram and they don't carry new ones, either (I asked just for the hell of it).

So, time to scour Craigslist. And also see if I can find anyone who says there is some cross-compatibility across the big 3. The bed dimensions I would think would be pretty close but one of the key differences might be how the hatch interfaces with the tailgate when they are both closed. That has to line up to close properly and make a decent weather seal. I don't really see the point in getting a cap that leaks.

Bed cap off a 2001 Dodge Ram. Should fit most trucks with 6 1/2' bed. Measures roughly 78 long , 69 wide at outside edges. IMpulse brand with side sliders and solid front window, light hookup.
$200. White. At least there is a local option. Not sure if I can stomach a white cap on a black truck. Even a free black truck. I could spray bomb it...many rattle cans and a shitty paint job later...

It's possible to do a "nice" paint job with spray cans. Probably not in the current cold weather, though...

I am confused. Did the guy with the Impala SS say the work truck needed a cap?

This thread is about the free Dodge Ram Kevin is getting from his uncle or whoever that he is (probably) using as a Ranger replacement. I agree with your sentiment, though, in trading it for the Impala SS.

You should call around to a few junkyards. It would be the easiest pick&pull ever.

On paper, it makes sense to trade a truck I don't need (even if it is a definite upgrade) for a rust-free B-body (a real SS, even). I don't really want to do this for some reasons, but probably more importantly, I highly doubt he would accept a 99 Ram 1500 2WD as trade (2WD is still worth less than 4WD even in NC). It's not like he is contractually bound to accept "any truck."

EDIT: Even more importantly, it is gone now.

I was mostly busting you up because you never really answered the question. I thought you were more into it than you obviously were. I am kind of surprised you weren't more into it actually since the real Impala SS was what I thought your top preference for a turbo B-body.

I can also understand not wanting to take something from a relative for free and immediately trading it for something else though.

I can't seem to find the right category for cap at car-part.com. Annoyingly, I did find tonneau cover...

I found it. It was under "pickup cap/camper shell."

Two came up under my New England search.

This one in Orono, ME for $150:
BLK, ROLL TOP SFT, 6.5'
And this one in Somers, CT for $125:
AP36831
Must be a stock number. Both are for a 99 Ram.

Ooh, changed my search criteria (the non-interchange search thing car-part.com does) and I found this:

Green Leer fiberglass cap for $195. What I really want is one that comes up at the back to give more cargo height. In black. That's pretty much not going to happen I can see...

Damn I should get the bumper off this truck, too.

On Dodges, even the bumpers leak oil. Must be why mine rusted.
