BaT Flipping Thread

Post by Bob »

This thread is to capture cars that I think have potential for another BaT flip. Ideally, I'd like to focus on cars from the 80s and 90s that went through a period of undesirability and are now on their way up in value. Many people may think the Prelude was a fluke or a lucky find, but I think it can be done again, especially if I broaden my horizon a bit. Obviously, it's better to stick with what I know best (90s Japanese stuff), but I think there's money to be made on some other brands.

Example: https://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/d/ ... 23458.html 1993 MB 500SL with 56k, one owner for $6500.

BaT comp: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1993- ... z-500sl-5/ 93 500SL with 71k, sold for $10k

This is a thinner margin that I'm willing to accept, especially on a 25 year old Mercedes where a lot can go wrong, but it is an example of where money can be made.

How about a 2001 BMW 325Ci? It's (now) a 2 owner car with a 5 speed and no options. All service records included.

J/K, more realistically, something like an optioned out 330Ci would be better. Or something older but more interesting, E30 or a 635i or something.

How about some non-German cars? I think rare-optioned interesting cars are the way to go here. I'll exclude things that are already too expensive (Impala SS, Turbo Supra, Grand National).

3rd-gen 1LE Camaro
3rd gen IROC with a 305 and a 5-speed
Mint '87-'88 Monte SS
Lexus IS300 SportCross (especially with a manual transmission)
MazdaSpeed Miata (the one with a factory turbo)
Any '90s Acura

Toyota Celica GT-4 All-Trac Turbo (so many words)
W20 MR2 Turbo
W10 Supercharged MR2
AE92 Corolla GT-S
Is the '04-'06 GTO interesting yet?
Are '90's Japanese luxury cars on this list (LS400, RL, Q45)
Mazda MX-3 RS (the one with the V6)
Dodge Spirit R/T
Dodge Daytona IROC R/T
Chrysler TC
Any of the Turbo IV K-cars (probably too rare)

Rally random things:
Hyundai Scoupe Turbo (yes this was a thing)
'Hawk'-edition Toyota Tercels (Red, White, Black)
AWD Ford Tempo

Speaking of the SportCross, this is a great LS swap candidate. Too bad the interior is so dirty!

Actually, perhaps the sky-rocketing value of the Gen IV Supra Turbo will pull the Gen III Supra Turbo up in value. And perhaps the other cars from that era like the 300ZX and Starion/Conquest.

Also, probably every mint Cadillac from the '80s and '90s would fit as well.

I found a non-running 1996 300ZX TT with only 67k on it on craigslist last weekend. It had been sitting for 5 years though. The seller claimed the non-running issue was an electrical problem. The asking price was $5k. If running and cleaned up, it would probably bring $15k-ish on BaT.

So tempting! There was something on the internet about restoring one of these...

Yup:

$11.5k invested including purchase cost.
