New M3

Turbo inline 6 (N55 variant). 425hp, an 11 hp upgrade from the old S65 V8. The engine weighs about 452 lbs per BMW, though I am REALLY curious if that includes the intercooler and turbos. Or clutch and flywheel. So you know where I am going with this.

The LS7 weighs 444lbs WITH dual mass clutch and flywheel. Without that, it weighs 387lbs (includes manifolds). Let's call it 400. So that's considerably more HP per pound than the new N55-variant. And it still probably fits in more engine bays (at 7.0L). It has more 80 more HP and 64 lb-ft more torque. It is a FAR simpler engine. Far, far, far simpler. It came out in 2006.

So I'd ask the question...why the hell is a 3 liter engine 450 lbs???

I will give them one thing: the fuel economy is probably better.

That is all.

It probably has better theoretical fuel economy. Turns out people don't know how to drive turbo vehicles for economy. See late model Fords with "eco-boost".
