Taking down a dead tree that fell over

Post by kevm14 »

This was at the other house, again. I did a lot of work on it this weekend.

This rotten tree fell over and was caught on another tree. That's no good and though it was in the back corner of the property, my tenant was nervous about it. So I had to do something or the burden would be on me for negligence.

First I tried my 10,000 lb straps and my truck. That didn't work. Make some ruts on the lawn. Also snapped one of my straps and it flew just to the right of the truck. Would have caused some damage for sure so just be careful when pulling stuff with a vehicle that stretches. Or use one of those blankets.

Then my tenant came outside to help and I convinced him to slide the rope midway up the tree. Then he tied it to another tree and we pulled the strap tight. I tried stepping on the resulting tight strap and we got stepped in unison to attempt to just shake the tree down (collapse the branch it was resting on perhaps, or even snap it in two). Well, it worked. It broke in half. Crazy. After that I just got out my chain saw and cut up what remained until it all fell down.

I believe I have a video but I will see what I got tomorrow and edit something down. I probably spent 45 minutes on this before moving onto leveling the side stairs on the deck and making them more solid...

It rubbed/chaffed against the tree until it snapped.
