Caprice headlight restore (3M kit)

Post by kevm14 »

I don't know if it was this exact kit but very similar:

This kit requires a drill. It also did not come with the UV protectant which is lame. You will have to do something to prevent this from happening again quickly. I used Meguiar's #26 car wax. I'd imagine using the 3M UV protectant specifically for plastic would be best. Oh well.

Passenger side before. This one is really bad and it noticeably affects the headlight performance.

Newman decided to lounge on the rear deck during this job...

I attacked the passenger side first because it was so bad.

Here it is after the first step, 500 grit pad.

I think this was after the 800 grit pad.

Then after the 3000 grit pad, which is a wet sanding step (water). Really starting to improve now.

After the polishing compound with the foam pad. Wow.

Onto the driver's side.

Before pic:

After 500 grit. I think I should have sanded more in this step.

After 800 grit. Crooked, too.
S7302931.JPG
After the 3000 grit wet sanding.
S7302932.JPG
After the compound w/ foam pad.
S7302933.JPG
All done. I think this was after wax.

A few more from my phone for some reason.

I think I felt guilty for neglecting the car...so this was nice.
