Yes

Bringing a mechanic along is one thing. Wanting to bring it to their mechanic is another thing. That's something that should be worked out in advance (like meeting you at the shop or whatever), unless in the off chance his mechanic is within acceptable test drive distance from the location of the car.

As far as paying for it cash is king, but a bank check an acceptable substitute (plus you wouldn't have to deal with carrying a bunch of cash to the bank. Something like the meet-at-bank arrangement Bill described may be acceptable.

Things to look out for on Craigslist:
- Stories that don't add up like: I'm looking at the car for my cousin but he is out of the country and will send a Western Union but only on Thursdays or some BS.
- Or really stories of any kind. There shouldn't be any drama in a car purchase.
- Requests to meet at a sketchy place.
- Requests for trades "I'll give you my finest boat"

Other stuff:
- I often see people putting their phone numbers in the ads asking for texts or whatever. Consider not doing that and having them respond with email through Craigslist. This may set the bar high enough to weed out lazy scammers who "don't do email". Also, this way you aren't putting your personal email or phone number on the internet.

- The Edmunds thing might be worth a try. Watch out for dealers, they will low ball you. Also, they won't want to pay much more than "trade-in" value anyway as they need to make a reasonable profit at "clean retail".

"That is what I thought until I was informed by a legit Craigslist seller that there are scams with certified bank checks going around. I definitly wouldn't take a personal check. I would say, if they insist on cash, meet at you bank, so you can deposit it right there. If they are paying with a certified check meet at their bank and insist to be there for the process. I don't know what the details of the scam are though. Best case is you both have the same bank..."

Interesting, hadn't heard about this. I know recently to get an apartment in NYC, the management company told me that they wanted certified checks for some things and I took care of it and didn't think anything of it.

As for the mechanic, I guess it all depends on the person. Maybe you guys would look for certain things where as someone such as I might not notice certain details and overlook it.

I know I am really annoying as a private sale used car buyer. It's just the way it is. Your car is still new enough that it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Yeah, i'm far too conservative to do one of those "well, my cousin isn't here but they'll pay you" or something that just sounds off. Also, I'm not the type to give out my phone number on craigslist. I'd wait to exchange a few emails with a person first and then if it's clear there is a real interest, then I'd consider doing that. For example, I tried using LetGo to sell my onkyo receiver/surround sound speakers and subwoofers. I had 1 person contact me and say there were interested (they live in the Bronx) and they asked me what my address was so they could put that into their GPS to find out how far away from them I was. I gave the person the town that I live in figuring that was good enough. The person responded that they needed an exact address. So rather than give out my exact address to a random stranger, I gave them the hospital that is nearby and told them that this hospital would have to suffice for the address. I exchanged a few more messages with this person but ultimately, he was not willing to drive out. I ended up posting an ad on craiglist, eventually found someone that just wanted the speakers and subwoofer and once we reached a deal and eventually I gave this guy my address and phone and that deal went fine.

Although, I will say, trading my car for a boat does sound tempting....:)

On my last car buying adventure with Adam, the seller had us drive back to his house so he could copy the bill of sale. I used his bathroom.

Regular people do exist on Craigslist. But you probably shouldn't assume they are regular until you have more information.
