What's sad is, as always with German stuff, when it's all working, it's really great. And when you read the forum post, those guys that work on German cars, and own them, just seem to accept all that by default, probably because there's nothing else they'd rather drive.

I think VW could be a legitimate player in the US market if they could get all their reliability issues worked out. I have always liked the VW and Audi products I have driven, but after reading threads like that, I just get nervous about owning one and stick with my Japanese cars. The Prius will probably make it to 100k or longer without an unscheduled repair stop. I am willing to trade some level of niceness for that kind of long term reliability. I guess one alternative would be to lease a VW and not own it outside of the warranty.

That's why I'm happy with American cars. I get the performance and character I like, and maintenance is usually reasonable. It also helps that I gravitate toward larger cars, I suppose.
