2014 E63S: A/C leak

You should know what this is. If not, you probably roll your windows down a lot.

2014 E63S: A/C leak

Post by kevm14 »

This is from March or maybe early April??
[X]- A/C light blinks 3 times and goes off when I ask for A/C. Quick forum search says either it is low on refrigerant or a pressure switch is bad. Update: charge was empty. I refilled with 2 cans plus 1 can stop leak plus 0.75-1 oz PAG-46. Light stays on now. We'll see how long it lasts. I don't think sitting for a year did this car any favors...also I didn't account for the $20 of R134a here....sue me.
Pretty sure the capacity is beginning to wane. It is still working but doesn't seem as good as it was a month or two ago. This is disappointing. I will have to borrow Ed's A/C leak detector and see if I can at least pinpoint the issue. I don't know that any A/C repairs to this car are particularly easy or cheap. I'll probably wait a bit longer and then add a can....

Added one can today. Mileage is 100,114. That seems to have fixed it but I will check on my way home from work.

Was working well as of yesterday but I realize this is only 3 weeks. That's a low bar. We'll see.

Last I checked it is still working. Coming up on 2 months. Of course the car will sit all next week but if it works through this week and the week of the 21st then that is a definite improvement. Or is it? Maybe the bar is about 2 months.

Capacity is down again and there is a temp difference between the right and left center vent (center right vent is warmer, particularly on higher fan speeds). I am not sure if it is worth adding a can at this point in the season though. It will be fairly empty on the spring I am sure and will need two cans again. Looks like it consumes 3 cans/yr (could stretch to 4 if I wanted to put one in now). I don't know how many A/C repairs would provide a return on investment compared to, what, $30/yr of R134a?

Added a can. It is not hot enough to know if it is at 100% capacity but it definitely had a very split temp across the vents before I added the can and it seems fine now. That was about 10 months if I am not mistaken.

I added maybe 6 oz more but not sure it needed it. I was doing the truck so I had it in my hands....

Well that was too much. Vent temps creep up at idle and the radiator fan goes nuts probably due to high condenser pressures. I'm great at this!
