WK2 145k Service

Figured I'd keep the trend going.

New-to-me WK2, initial service (dealer changed oil at Jiffy Lube - 5k interval recommends servicing again at 148k) - I'll just do it sooner-ish.

To do:
Engine oil and filter
Troubleshoot leaks
Cabin Filter
Engine Air Filter
Plugs
Transmission Fluid
Xfer case fluid
Rear Diff/Front Diff Fluid
Rotate Tires

Is the list shorter than the Benz list?

Oil and filter (5W-20) - local mechanic recommended Zinc additive. I'll run 1500-2k mi on the dealer change and see if I have any oil consumption. I don't want to do a Zinc additive or diesel oil w/Zinc unless I know there is no appreciable oil consumption.

Address/make a plan for leaks: There appears to be engine oil/wetness around engine oil pan area - need to put on lift and investigate.

Change differential fluid / inspect for CV or u-joint issues. Jeep has a mild low frequency vibration during low-speed accel from stop, especially while turning. Suspect lack of slip additive in rear diff or transfer case clutch/viscous coupling is unhappy. Owners manual calls for limited slip additive for electronic locking rear diff that I think the Overland's got. xfer case gets ATF +4 (I wonder if that's a Chrysler corp carry-over and Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic trans fluid would be fine)

Change transmission fluid - need to find a decent source for a transmission pan/filter. About 2X-3X Benz pricing... Planning on running Valvoline Maxlife synthentic universal fluid.

Rotate tires.

There's a $90 Raybestos pan/filter on RockAuto. That appears to be the only non-Mopar, non-separate filter (Dorman) reasonable aftermarket option. I also emailed ZF to ask about what's different in their PN 1087.298.360 (w/fluid) and 1087.298.361 (w/o fluid) vs. Chrysler PN 68225344AA. I also asked them if they had a US distributor for their aftermarket that I could buy from.

When ordering plugs, I didn't realize the Hemi used 16 spark plugs. Reading NGK's application guides I believe I navigated to the correct stock plug. $6.50 each makes it $106 for a plug change, but I just bit the bullet and ordered them, along with a new air and cabin filter.

Still need to pickup the Chrysler limited slip additive for the rear diff.

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.7L V8/8HP70 ZF transmission and I was hoping to find a ZF filter/fluid kit for it. PN's 1087.298.360 and 1087.298.361 appear to be applicable, but I was hoping you could help with two things: 1) Is the Chrysler pan (PN 68225344AA?) deeper/larger than the ZF pan? 2) Where would I be able to find a US online distributor? The distributor finder seems to only point me to a heavy truck repair parts distributor.

Does their agreement with Stellantis prevent the US availability of a ZF pan for ALL of these vehicles? That's kind of insane. Alternatively, is one of these available via OEM sources at a price cheaper than Mopar? That would be hilarious.

Thinking through the ZF response, I believe they were trying to lead me to the conclusion that other applications would fit and be appropriate from ZF without telling me that. By saying the BMW pans were shallow, maybe they were trying to say the "other" pans were deep and would work.

I cancelled my Raybestos pan order and I'll do a little shopping for a real ZF pan/filter.

Max life is slightly thicker (but I postulate not enough to matter) than ZF 8:

100 deg C viscosity:
Maxlife: 5.9 - Lifeguard 5.6 (Maxlife says cSt, Lifeguard says mm^2/s - assume that's the same)

50 deg C viscosity
Maxlife: 28 - Lifeguard 26 mm^2/s (Maxlife says cSt, Lifeguard says mm^2/s - assume that's the same)

Brookfield Viscoity @ -40 cP:
Maxlife: 11,000 - Lifeguard: 8850 (Maxlife says "cP", ZF says "MPa.s" - I need to look up if those the same unit)

I can't seem to get a straight story on if the Land Rover pans are = to the BMW pans and therefore shallow or not.

Changed the front differential, transfer case, and rear diff fluid tonight. Test driving at first I thought the vibration under hard accel was better, but further into the drive I'm not sure it's improved. I tried "sand" and "snow" 4WD modes, and it seemed to get rid of the vibration. I wonder if the electrically activated "limited slip" in the transfer case is the cause of the noise/vibration.

Pretty decent write up I think. Somewhat conventional automatic transmission clutch pack apparently. My fluid looks OK, so that would indicate that it's OK per their "troubleshooting guide".

Anecdotally they would indicate that I should try a replacement position sensor, or I guess check for "clicking" of the shift motor, but they seem to have no additional info on that...
