Changed the oil in my pressure washer for the first time (used M1 10W-30 that I had lying around). Used my 15" floor cleaner and it did a nice job.
I am now 99% sure this is stain, not paint. It does not chip or scratch off with my fingernail. So I will definitely use stain this time, a colored/solid stain.
This is all I have for before shots. I had lightly power washed this in the spring so some of the stain was already removed.
And after a thorough wash.
I think it was Frank who suggested spraying it on (like from a hand pumped pressure sprayer) and spread with a brusher or roller. I think the spindles and rails will actually be more annoying to do than the decking. I have settled on either a Bear Premium stain or PPG Timeless stain. I need to do the math on the square footage and coverage.

Re: Deck restaining
I was at Benny's over the weekend, they're having a pretty good sale on Cabot stains. 25% off plus $10 a gallon mail in rebate.
Re: Deck restaining
I ended up buying PPG Timeless solid stain + sealant. It is fairly viscous like paint.
Prep was just pressure washing and some Behr deck cleaner. I used the floor one for the decking and the wand for the railing and spindles. Managed to paint one deck board since I finished the railing and spindles and had a little paint left. This was all done with a single 2.5" tapered brush.
All this took like 5-1/2 hours. For a single coat. It was extremely tedious but I wanted to paint every inch so I had to reach through the spindles for like half the job.

Since I get home so late I had Jamie snap a few pictures in the daylight. It looks good!

Re: Deck restaining
Today I did the deck boards. I used my 18" high nap roller. First I brushed all the edges where the roller wouldn't get. And then I went to town. I used just over 1 gallon for everything, including the railings, where I put a second coat before starting the deck boards. The deck boards will need a second coat so I did need the second gallon but I will have at least 1/2 gallon left when I am done.
I might go back and stain between boards with my brush before the second coat. Oh and I will need to do ladder business and paint all the joists and support beams. I should have plenty of stain left for that.
I did think about doing the spindles in white to add some nice contrast. But after some discussion with different people I decided against it. Aside from the obvious more work, and that I don't think any stains actually come in white, it doesn't match the setting. This is the woods, not a country club.
It looks like the red channel is blowing out on some of these pics. The ones that look almost pink are the ones that are like that. It looks more like the darker shots. Too lazy to use dSLR...or turn exposure down on phone camera.
I think this is looking really good. It will look more uniform when I do the second coat. Unlike the railing and spindles, this took at most an hour. Probably less. I like that you can see the grain structure of the wood, even though it is a solid stain.I might go back and stain between boards with my brush before the second coat. Here are a couple pics from before we bought it, dated Nov 2014, almost 3 years ago. The stain was holding up until I power washed it this spring.

Got the second coat on the deck. It looks really good.
I also managed to paint most of the perimeter stuff before I ran out of a paint. Only the two 4x4 support beams left. You can see the two beams on the right are untouched. Wow, a non-potato-vision shot. Thanks sketchy OIS.

Re: Deck restaining
7 years later I decided to clean out the gunk that had accumulated under the deck on top of that roofing material. During heavy rain it would back up and leak down the siding and onto the door, which would also leak. So as part of my keep-the-basement-dry efforts, I decided it was finally time to do this. Of course I picked a cold, rainy day in Sept so it was a pretty miserable job. Probably took me 4 hours. I unscrewed most of the panels except for the last couple courses and used a hose to rinse. This sounds simple but in practice it took a lot of rinsing from both directions and of course I got soaked and filthy.
