08 Mercedes C300 4Matic: replace coil
Going to replace the #6 coil with OEM. Also replace the air box seal as well as the missing wire retaining clip for the airbox.
I promised 20 minutes but we'll see.
I do have a broader work plan so let my organize my thoughts:
- Check generic OBD2 codes. Looking for maybe a history code for coil/misfire but nothing for swirl valve, if so, proceed to next step, as this confirms the original diagnosis. If P2004 present as setting MIL, notify owner the CEL will still be on after replacing the coil but that will fix the misfire issue.
- Verify #6 based on the code(s)
- Replace coil. Bolts are 9 Nm which is 6.5-7 lb-ft (or 80 in-lbs) Not much.
- Replace seal on air box and wire retaining clip
- With air box still removed, inspect swirl valve linkage and consider actuating to verify movement/no movement. Actuate both the runner linkage and swirl valve linkage and observe operation of both systems.
- If broken where actuator connects to the triangle pivot for the swirl valves, but both sides are still linked together, zip tie the swirl valves open on the pass side which should also reset the driver's side
- For whatever is still working, liberally douche all pivots with white lithium spray.
Tools to bring:
- Right angle pick
- 3/8" torque wrench for coil bolt I guess
- Needle nose (various)
- Hose pliers
- Magnet
- Grasping/grabber thing
- eDiag Elite
- Full DAS w/ multiplexer as a backup
- White lithium spray
- Dielectric grease
- E socket set
- Torx sockets in case coils use those
- Hex sockets in case coils use those
- Allen sockets in case coils use those (highly unlikely)
- 3/8 ratchet
- Various extensions including wobble ones
- Flat head screw driver
- Light
- A few rags
- Gloves
- Ramps? If so, wood for ramps
