08 Mercedes C300 4Matic: replace coil
Going to replace the #6 coil with OEM. Also replace the air box seal as well as the missing wire retaining clip for the airbox.
I promised 20 minutes but we'll see.
I do have a broader work plan so let my organize my thoughts:
- Check generic OBD2 codes. Looking for maybe a history code for coil/misfire but nothing for swirl valve, if so, proceed to next step, as this confirms the original diagnosis. If P2004 present as setting MIL, notify owner the CEL will still be on after replacing the coil but that will fix the misfire issue.
- Verify #6 based on the code(s)
- Replace coil. Bolts are 9 Nm which is 6.5-7 lb-ft (or 80 in-lbs) Not much.
- Replace seal on air box and wire retaining clip
- With air box still removed, inspect swirl valve linkage and consider actuating to verify movement/no movement. Actuate both the runner linkage and swirl valve linkage and observe operation of both systems.
- If broken where actuator connects to the triangle pivot for the swirl valves, but both sides are still linked together, zip tie the swirl valves open on the pass side which should also reset the driver's side
- For whatever is still working, liberally douche all pivots with white lithium spray.
Tools to bring:
- Right angle pick
- 3/8" torque wrench for coil bolt I guess
- Needle nose (various)
- Hose pliers
- Magnet
- Grasping/grabber thing
- eDiag Elite
- Full DAS w/ multiplexer as a backup
- White lithium spray
- Dielectric grease
- E socket set
- Torx sockets in case coils use those
- Hex sockets in case coils use those
- Allen sockets in case coils use those (highly unlikely)
- 3/8 ratchet
- Various extensions including wobble ones
- Flat head screw driver
- Light
- A few rags
- Gloves
- Ramps? If so, wood for ramps

Re: 08 Mercedes C300 4Matic: replace coil
Went mostly according to plan.
Coils look original. Two torx bolts, removed coil. New coil appeared to have nice strips of dielectric already installed so I just put it in. Code scans before. Code scan after I probably should have reset all but I only reset the ECM.
Took a look at the intake manifold stuff. The triangle piece was broken off as expected for the swirl valve linkage but it also seemed like everything was frozen. I was unable to move the pass side swirl valve at all. Totally stuck. Didn't want to force it. I also tried the long/short runner actuation and saw nothing moving. So honestly if it were my car I would just get a Pierburg manifold from Rockauto and put it on. But, these issues to not appear to be causing a CEL and I'm sure it's been like this for a long time.
The coil did fix the misfire. Also replaced the air box seal and retaining clip which was satisfying.
Basic visual inspection looked great. No leaks anywhere (at least on top and front of the engine).
I have a tentative plan to go back and do the other 5 coils plus all the plugs. It should be due right at 180k anyway. And that's more cheap and easy work that I can take on.

Re: 08 Mercedes C300 4Matic: replace coil
To do:
- Buy 5 more coils
- Buy 6 plugs (consider OEM, depends on pricing). A0041591803. OEM is $15/ea https://www.mercedesbenzpartsshop.com/o ... g-41594903 and StarParts version is $11.30 /ea https://www.mercedesbenzpartsshop.com/o ... 4159180390
- Price out fog lights for information. Right: A2048202256, $140, https://www.mercedesbenzpartsshop.com/o ... 2048202256 or $119 for Hella (likely OE), https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/merced ... 2048202256
Left: A2048202156, $151, https://www.mercedesbenzpartsshop.com/o ... 2048202156 or $67 for Hella (likely OE), https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/merced ... 2048202156
Needs air filters so maybe I should ask.
Might need a couple bulbs at the rear but it is intermittent (had stored codes for a right rear turn signal and left rear marker but everything was functioning yesterday).
To do the plugs and coils only I would bring:
- Spark plug socket (just test on the new plugs to make sure I have the right one, could be 12 point 14mm, who knows)
- Dielectric grease at least for the one coil I did which smeared its new grease on the old plug
- Compact portable blower (for the plug wells)
- 1/4" torque wrench as before (80 in-lbs torx for coil bolts)
- 3/8" torque wrench for plugs (not sure on torque yet)

Re: 08 Mercedes C300 4Matic: replace coil
So she said the dealer quoted $800 for fog lights. I'm going to assume that was for BOTH.
Dealer retail for both is $498 and ASRA says 0.5 hr book to install both. So assuming $250/hr (could be more now), we are up to $623 before tax and any other fee. Certainly kinda within range of $800 I guess.
I could do both as Hellas from FCP Euro for $186. I believe they all come with bulbs. Left was burnt out so that saves a little bit as well. I think they are H7s.
