Is that behavior modified for Win 8? It's just as configurable. I set mine to hibernate when pressing power (shutting down unexpectedly is the worst). But my desktop is on 24/7. On the HTPC, the power button is probably set to enter standby. I use a combination of standby and hibernate on my laptop. And just standby on my tablet. So actually I never deal with any of the supposedly confusing Win 8 stuff.
