Carb a LQ4/LQ9???

Post by bill25 »

More options for a LS swap into a carbed car.

I get that fuel injected is probably more efficient, but this could be an intermediate step to get the car on the road.
I really need to read more about this to make an educated decision.

It would simplify the initial swap a little anyway. Maybe? No fuel tank changes? No computer, no sensors. Not sure about the gauges.

Here is an example of a car for sale that is running one of these MSD boxes on a Monte with a 5.7. Not sure which 5.7.

I really should buy this.

It can be done.

It's been done, actually. Many articles, dyno tests, and parts are available.

Summit has 28 Gen III/IV carbureted intakes for sale: http://www.summitracing.com/search/depa ... ed-engines

I wonder if this is a good intermediate step. I will have to add up the costs/work/difficulty/time for both options.

I would still buy the motor with all of the intake, accessories, and computer. But maybe to start out, use all of the stock Monte stuff at first w/carb, then a year or 2 later convert to EFI.

I have to look into the setups more, but I am not even sure the Monte has down stream o2 sensors for the LS engine. I know that that isn't a show stopper, but it is yet another thing to fabricate/buy.

I see this as a multiple part project.

Engine/possible transmission swap - big job
rear end - if/when it blows up - medium job
Changing over to computer controlled with EFI including mods to tank, fuel pump, and gauges - big job
adapting LS engine to carb - small/medium job

These are estimates from somebody that knows nothing. I ordered a book...
