I am currently thinking that a rattle at idle only is just the isolator. Still don't know the labor to replace (i.e. does it require removing the supercharger?).
Any other kind of rattle, like at higher rpm, is quite possibly a bearing issue. And I think that requires a replacement supercharger. The good news is, the warranty is there, and you could pretty quickly ferret this out in the test drive.
All that said I still wouldn't pay a premium for a lower mileage one.

Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
I'd also strike up a conversation and see if any supercharger service has been done (new isolator, or new blower). You could also just go drive the car, unless you really wanted a dealer for your first time (ideally unescorted). But maybe this guy would actually not mind a nice 30-45 minute test drive.
Miles don't really seem to be a major factor, as PLENTY of folks had noise with less than 50k (some less than 10k) and got supercharger replacements. It would be ideal I think to find a car that had a replacement supercharger, but not mandatory. The contaminated grease issue will become a problem very early in the car's life, not at like 95k.

One isolator replacement:

$60. Not sure on labor. I don't think it's that invasive. I think the bearing issues require replacement of the supercharger.

Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
So you don't have to worry about supercharger replacement during the 10 year/120k warranty. But after that:
GM replacement is like $6500. However you can find them for less than that (you may have to swap over the throttle body, injectors, etc.).
I found one on eBay for $2500. It's the same as replacing an intake manifold. In fact it IS the intake manifold (integrated).
So I'm not really scared of this. With the 95k car, you'd have 3 years and 25k to find a problem and get a dealer to give you a new blower before you even need to think about this (or get rid of the car if you are that nervous past the 10 year/120k mark).
And back to my original point, at 95k, I think the probability of developing a bearing issue is actually quite low, assuming the test drive reveals no issues.
I am biased but I'd rather take a chance on a V2 than an E92 M3.

Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
Officially adding the ATS to the list.
Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
You'd think you could have driven a couple by now (CarMax, et al).
Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
The CarMax test drive is usually too short for me to make a great assessment of a vehicle. I am hoping to get one as a rental someday even if I have to pay a small upcharge. One thing that renting a lot of cars over the last few years has taught me is that a 5 mile drive is inadequate to assess a vehicle. I find that after 100 or 200 miles, I have a much better feel for what I am getting.
Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
This makes me feel better about where V2 prices could be headed: http://greenville.craigslist.org/cto/5487272757.html
Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
Interestingly, an ATS may actually fulfill daily driver duties better. Better fuel economy, great platform with the dynamic and intangible characteristics that you value, reasonable to acquire. The V2 is really not the same thing. I think it is very good (superior to the old V10 M5, which is a high bar), but it won't be as tossable as an ATS. Personally, I'd rather have the V2. The gen 2 CTS isn't a large car but it has more interior room than the ATS as far as I know. Plus trapping 115-119 (pick a review) is sweet.
Re: Kia Rondo Replacements
Agreed - I think that operating costs, even excluding fuel, for the V2 may just be too high to rationalize it as a daily driver, especially when I have a mostly urban commute where speeds rarely exceed 55 MPH. Also, I have started to confirm that I just prefer smaller more tossable cars no matter how good the larger car is so maybe the ATS would probably be more fun for me. I think this came to light when I realized I had a lot more fun in the canyon roads with my 2015 Miata rental than I did in the 2016 Camaro rental. The Camaro's design is at least a decade newer and it is much faster through the same roads, but I still felt more connected to the Miata and had more fun driving it.
