I appreciate that you remember that. Recap from memory:
76-1/2 debut, rear drums
77: adds rear discs and I think a new grill, and possibly steering wheel
78: reduction from 180 hp to 170?
79: adds optional trip computer and O2 sensor, though not sure what the percentages are in terms of all 1979 production (O2 may also have been CA emissions only)

Online research reveals the trip computer was available in 1978. And I was right about the power.

What's somewhat exciting is I am finally approaching a position where I could just buy one of those and have it. The wife would still complain but money wise and space wise, I could do it. While the rest of mid-30-somethings are like "hey, maybe I can get that brand new 5-series I always wanted."

I think these are a pretty safe buy from a financial perspective. They don't seem to be going down in value.

I really need to just buy stuff like this, drive it, hopefully get over it, sell it in at least the condition I got it in, and get most/all of my money back. I am missing the boat and I could be sampling all kinds of interesting and very affordable cars.

That was kind of how I look at my ITR purchase. It wasn't exactly cheap, but I didn't lose much either. I also regret selling every time I see a similar car going for double what I paid. Values have really spiked in the last few years.

You could probably have a satisfactory experience with something much cheaper than an ITR. A spare $3-5k could provide some interesting experiences over the next few years.
