That's the thing. It's just about that bad. It sounds crazy, but I think people make assumptions, as you have and figure, hey, it's a smaller vehicle with a smaller engine, it MUST be more efficient!

The Tacoma got better mileage than a 1/2 ton truck maybe in the 90s. Small truck mileage hasn't really improved since then while 1/2 ton mileage has improved tremendously. A V6 Tacoma gets no better fuel economy than a 90s S10 4.3L V6.

My parents used to have a '98 Tacoma before it rusted away and was bought back by Toyota. It was an 4x4 SR-5 with a 5-speed and the 2.7L 3RZ-FE 4-cylinder. It was driven mostly in town and got 17-19 mpg. Which is slightly better than my Fleetwood would do under the same circumstances, probably. On a pure highway trip, it was more in the 20-22 mpg range, which is exactly in line with my Fleetwood.

Fuelly backs up this data http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tacoma/1998. Be sure to check out other years of the Tacoma and notice that the mileage hasn't really changed while the truck has gotten bigger, more powerful and more "fancy" with upgraded interiors and sound deadening.

Right, while 1/2 tons got all of that and even better fuel economy.
