2021 Toyota Supra Adds 255-HP Turbo Four, and Inline-6 Gains Power
The updated inline-six gains 47 horsepower, up to 382 hp, and the 2.0-liter turbo four is new.
The 2021 Toyota Supra will have an updated, more powerful version of the turbocharged inline-six. There's a new four-cylinder engine option, too.
The six now produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Expect to see 2021 Supras at dealers in June. We are estimating that prices will start at just above $40,000 for the Supra 2.0 and $50,000 for the Supra 3.0.
With the update to the inline 6, that probably puts it about even with a gen 6 Camaro SS. For more money. Unless of course this is just a re-rating to the output it actually has. That would be hilarious.
And the 255hp base car is still $10k too expensive. Granted it will probably be faster than the 2.0T Camaro but how much faster? The Camaro is well under $30k.
That 200-pound-lighter, cheaper four-cylinder Supra has a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter that's also sourced from BMW, teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota claims a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds—1.2 seconds quicker than the last Toyota 86 we tested. However, the 2.0 does not use the same differential and adaptive dampers as the more powerful 3.0. It'll also have smaller 18-inch wheels, manually adjustable seats, and an audio system with four speakers compared to the 3.0's 10.
4 speaker audio for $40k is rough, imo.
To kick off the 2021 model year, Toyota is offering 1000 Supra 3.0s in special A91 Edition guise. Pricing for this special edition is expected to start at around $57,000, and it's offered in Nocturnal (black) or Refraction, a new blue exterior paint job exclusive to the A91 Edition. It'll be distinguished by a black carbon-fiber lip spoiler in the rear, 19-inch matte black wheels, unique C-pillar graphics, and carbon-fiber mirrors. Inside, it has Alcantara trim and blue-accented stitching.
The 2021 Supras will arrive at dealerships in June, and now all come standard with the 2020 3.0 Premium's 8.8-inch touchscreen. We are estimating that prices will start at just above $40,000 for the Supra 2.0, $50,000 for the Supra 3.0, $55,000 for the Supra 3.0 Premium, and topping out at $57,000 for the Supra A91 Edition.
Man you get so much more performance car for the money with the Camaro. But we all know that.
Backfires discussion:

Bottom line: The 2021 Supra's inline 6 cylinder engine is the 2020 Z4's M40i engine!*
Obviously Toyota didn't have BMW develop a "new" 382 HP/365-ft-lb of torque B58 inline 6 when such an engine (already emissions certified around the globe) already exists.
*I'll note that Toyota claims that the 2021 Supra's compression ratio is 10.2:1, while the 2020's Supra and Z4 M40i's advertised compression ratio was 11:1. I haven't yet seen the 2021 Z4 M40i's compression ratio in print.
This source specially states that the 2021 Supra's inline 6 is "the same engine" as the Z4 M40i's:

Excerpt: "This brings the Supra's output in line with the BMW Z4 M40i, which uses the same engine."
This would all be exciting...if I was a BMW enthusiast.
