All of the injectors are now out. Only the front two cylinder injectors pulled the cups out with the injectors. I think I'm still going to reseal the other 6 since I've read of a lot of coolant pressure stories after injector replacement, I don't want to be one of those stories.
0/4 on passenger side glow plugs - all 4 broke off in the head. Time to start welding. If each one takes 8 attempts, I'll be in for it. It already took me about 8 tries each for the two that broke off on the drivers side. I believe that will be the last of my stuck/rusted/busted fastener removal sequence, and if I can get all 4 out then I'll start ordering parts to get it back together...

Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Don't forget about Area Diesel Service.
Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Their website catalog search is horrendous. After fighting for 10 min I've concluded they don't have the injector lineset and appear to have limited accessories. I'm pretty well convinced on local injectors, and their valve cover gasket sets are "only" $40 ea, so I may get those and then piece together everything else I need from a variety of websites I guess.
I do wish I could come up with a "cheap" set of AC Delco glow plugs - RockAuto seems to be the best option on those.
So $85 or so for valve cover gasket sets, $125 for glow plugs, and $20 for valve cover fasteners. I think I'm better off piece-mealing vs. the "set".
$200-$250 for line sets, or up to $700 if I go OEM. I'm tempted by one of the much cheaper stainless options, but I do think stress fatigue cracking is possible on these lines if they're done poorly... Do I trust Dorman enough? At least they're a relatively big name...

Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Finally got everything apart:
- glow plugs were a PIA - finally got all of them out. 6/8 required significant weld-on-nut removal technique - each one at least 3 or 4 attempts
- injectors came out OK - front two were stuck in the injector cups. Significant coking deposits around tips resulted in the injectors being really stuck to the cups. Had to heat the cups to get the goo to separate. It came out like a carbon snake out of the injector/cup tip. I think the cups survived fine, so at least that's less I need to chase buying and I can stick with all-original cups.
I hope the other cups come out easily once I get the tool, I probably won't get to those until Monday...

Still can't decide on the source for the line set. I'm tempted to do Dorman through RockAuto because of their lifetime warranty...
Injectors from the local shop still look the best I think at $205 ea.

Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
In theory Dorman is acceptable for a fully mechanical product.
Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Picked up the injectors at $1744.14 w/ tax. Just ordered what I think is everything else I need from RockAuto for $721.73. Sheesh this turned into an expensive repair for a total so far of $2465.87.
Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
I think that literally makes this my most expensive repair ever. RockAuto should have everything here by Friday.
Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Got all of the parts from the RockAuto order in today. Permatex threadlocker applied and all injectors installed and torqued. I've read that it reaches full strength in 24 hours, so I'll hold off finishing and running the engine until I get back from VT on Sunday night/Monday.
Re: 2001 Duramax LB7 Knocking
Got it all back together last night and into today. Runs OK - only idled in the garage so far. No smoke even during initial startup and no smoke with any off-idle revving. No evidence of cooling system pressurization which would be a symptom of poorly sealed injector cups, at least during the 15 min or so I had it running. Dumping oil out of the intake valley. Some portion of the turbocharger feed/return circuit. Based on the rate of the leak, I'm guessing turbocharger oil supply line rusted through.
Have to figure out how to pull the turbo and buy lines for it.
