Did a small amount of research and ordered the FLIRC receiver.

If I understand correctly, this is plug and play and will just work with my MCE remote. If not, I should be able to program buttons. I also bought a USB extension cable because this is a dongle and the only ports that wake the system from sleep are at the back.

Didn't work.

After MUCH pulling my hair out (Linux) I decided to check the remote with my phone camera.

In an insane twist, the red light comes on indicating it sees the button press but it DOES NOT transmit the actual IR signal. That light is the button press light that is red. There should be a bright IR LED in the center of the black part and it's not illuminating.

I was able to flex it and get it to transmit and work (I used the FLIRC windows software just because it was easier for me to use). When I flexed the remote I was able to get a signal. I also tried this in Kodi and it did work for one button press with the FLIRC receiver. So it's the goddamn remote!

Ordered a used identical remote. Whew.

That fixed it. Crazy. I bet my other receivers work fine, too. Now I have....three of them.

It was hard to capture this since it flashes. But this is what it should look like through an IR sensitive camera.
