14 E63S: steering rack replacement

It's pronounced "chassy." Brakes, suspension...things that make the car fun or a death trap

Parts hadn't opened yet but I saw someone in there. I go "I have a core for you when you open up" and he goes "are you Kevin?". Haha

I said yeah and he said "I'm Mike.". Finally met him as I usually come on Saturdays which he doesn't work. So that already happened and I got a refund email at like 7:48am before they even opened.

Talked to the alignment guy. Turns out he did my car in July. He asked me what I did and I told him my concern about camber. He said they would probably charge another hour labor to fiddle with the camber. So if they only charge me once I'll probably get the alignment sheet, tweak what I need to at home and bring it back. If they insist on charging twice I guess I should just pay the labor and at least get something out of it. We'll see. It's on the rack now.

I elected to bring it home and adjust. Left side needs an extra 0.5° of negative camber to get to nominal spec and match the right. Just occurred to me that my garage is probably not perfectly level. Which is why they both measured 89.9 on my lift but were different camber on the alignment rack (which is very level).

This time it measured at 89.8° so I just subtracted 0.5 and targeted 89.3°.

This is before I took the car back home to adjust.

And done. He said he tried to get the toe dead nuts and not just in the range. We'll see how centered the steering wheel is. Washing it now and should be out of here soon.

Once you present as a picky but reasonable customer a good tech will go the extra mile. Always appreciated.

I am happy to report it everything is good and I am satisfied. Jeff gave me a decent discount. I paid $167 out the door.
