Replaced the horn in the STS. Used the AC Delco D1947F. It comes as a single assembly. I think it was 440Hz and 360Hz. OEM was actually Denso. The AC Delco replacement did not look exactly like the OEM but it was form/fit/function. It was only $21.
Replacement was fairly easy considering how the car usually goes. I had to remove the air filter box and air intake tube. The horns bolt into the frame rail with a single body-style 10mm nut and integral stud which clamps the frame. It was super hot so I was drenched but it wasn't that hard.
Results are the horn now sounds very crisp and loud. I think the old horn with the broken, uh, horn piece, was not as loud as it should have been. It sounded like one note was much more prominent. So now it's fixed.

Re: General STS thread
Adam will be happy; I finally pulled my right rear wheel to inspect the pads and rotors. Result: inner pad pretty worn but not down to the wear indicators. Outer pad not so bad. Inner rotor wear. I think the squeal was what I suspected: pad clips were rubbing on the rust ridge of the rotor. So I bent them away from the rotor. This car will need a brake job at some point and at least new rotors on the rear.
Also, the right rear tire has more wear in the center than the edges, leading me to suspect they wanted lower pressure. Maybe the 30 psi spec isn't just for ride - it's for wear.

Re: General STS thread
This is so bad. I really don't want to buy more Continentals but the fronts look decent still and I don't really want mismatched tires, so I may have to spring for new rears this fall. These are kind of the premier 4 ultra high performance all seasons.
The comparison between the Michelin and Continental reminds me of my own evaluation between the Conti DW and Michelin PSS. The PSS both felt and performed better on my CTS-V. The DW had a bit softer ride which, on the V, I did not like. So you may think...so the DWS would be the perfect all season for my STS right? Well, maybe not. It may be a daily driver, and it may be a heavy AWD vehicle, but it still has good steering and a reasonably well tuned chassis. I may only push it occasionally but the last thing I want to think when I do is "boy this would be better with better tires." And with the $70 MIR/card on the Michelins, they aren't really more expensive than the DWS. The only catch is, I really only need 2 rears before winter. So there is a good chance I will just get two of the DWS and save my upgrade to 255/45s all around for next time.
And as far as size sensitivity for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+:
235/50 & 255/45: $781.32 before tax/fees/$70 MIR
235/50 F/R: $735.96 before tax/fees/$70 MIR
255/45 F/R: $826.68 before tax/fees/$70 MIR
Looking at this, I can't see investing in the staggered sizes again. The upgrade to all 255/45s isn't much more. If I was really looking to save money I'd consider 235/50s all around like one guy on the forum did but honestly I could never bring myself to do that.
As for the tires in the comparison, in 255/45, the Michelin price is $756.68 after MIR (Tirerack). The rest are:
Conti DWS 06: $735.96
Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus (after MIR): $672.12
And I don't see the Potenza 980AS's
Other tires in the size:
Dunlop Signature HP: $525.72 (still on closeout!)
COOPER ZEON RS3-G1: $676.92
GENERAL G-MAX AS-05: $642.12
GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC ALL-SEASON (after MIR): $639.96
SUMITOMO HTR A/S P02 (W-SPEED RATED): $477.72
So quite a range but as you get into the main brands (Cooper, General, Goodyear) I don't see a huge price gap with the segment leaders from that review. I mean we're talking $100 for a set, for the price difference. Actually the Pirellis are basically the same as those others.
It kills me that the DWS 06 is almost as expensive as the Michelin but again I only need the rear 2.

Still have my CL search on.

Appears to be a loaded 1SG and look at that - adaptive cruise, too! $4k and less miles than mine. This is why I don't think I underpaid or was ridiculous to avoid the $6k, $7k and $8k offerings that I saw while looking. It does say rebuilt title though. So there's that.Cadillac STS 2005 - $4000 (South Kingstown)

Re: General STS thread
Yeah, rebuilt title is a big value killer, although maybe not as much so on older cars where condition starts to matter more than history.
Re: General STS thread
Yeah it's not like this car would be worth $8k with a clean title. Or even $6k. And even if someone bought it at $4k, how much would they lose after 20k, 40k or even 75k of driving vs a similar example with a clean title? Could you even measure it?
Re: General STS thread
I guess I would be less concerned with a rebuilt title on a lower value car, because the amount of damage required to warrant a rebuilt title is much less.
Re: General STS thread
That's true, too.
But what I was saying was that if someone bought this car for $4k (and they may have - it is deleted) and drove it another 37k to 150k, what would it be worth? And a non-salvage title car for, say, $5500, with the same 37k of use, what would it be worth after those 3 years? I think the delta would be extremely small.

Re: General STS thread
Here's a new one.
The Devil Went Down to Georgia came on my Pandora station this morning. First time ever. But that used to be one of my favorites back in the day so it brought back some memories. Anyway, I kept turning it up in the car, naturally. Well get this - I ran out of gain. I had that shit maxed out and it still sounded really good. I know this is an older recording and definitely would need more gain than a modern mix to reach the same overall volume, but I am still surprised. Very satisfied with this audio system.
