His comment about speedometers being inaccurate is also funny. Plenty of American OEMs ship accurate speedos.

What I don't understand is what the advantage is. How does injecting less urea really help VW sell a more appealing product? Does urea injection also reduce fuel economy and power? I didn't think so. But perhaps conversion efficiency requires certain engine parameters (like a catalytic converter in a gas engine requires a stoichiometric AFR). And perhaps those parameters (like in a gas engine) preclude ideal power or fuel efficiency.
What's particularly damning is that in the alternative low urea mode, the emissions reduction efficiency checks are disabled! In other words, emissions system efficiency falls so far that the car should set a check engine light on itself, but it doesn't.
