I recently listened to a podcast on this topic. They said YouTube will pay between $1 and $3 per 1000 views depending on what ads are shown before or during your videos. In other words, you need to be very, very popular to make anything resembling a living on YouTube.

That jives with the data I have seen before.

Although I think that may be old data.

I will say I think it is very important to have the right personality - people need to literally care about the things you have to say. I mean you can have a small channel with niche content but it will never be big unless people care about you, not just your content.
