It appears to be an MX-6 with 3rd gen RX-7 wheels.

It is an MX-6, from the same time period as the last gen RX-7 sold here (mid 90's). Kind of similar styling. No rotary. It shared the same V6 with the 626, and that Mazda supplied the Probe.
It is actually an interesting data point with this car. Back then, Car and Driver said the engine was good from Mazda, used in both cars, but gave the win to the Probe for handling, and in the Mazda3 I have, the Ford engine was good, but Mazda's suspension and steering is deemed better than the Focus.

Based on the article, The MX-6 would be pretty good with stiffer suspension. That is really all it seemed to get dinged on.

It only lost 0.1L after all those miles. That's pretty good. Most engines lose a lot more displacement. Some lose entire cylinders.
