Seems excessive and it also makes me ask the question of why Ford sees the Mustang and Ford GT as adequate coverage for sporty cars?

I would argue Ford will have many more offerings of sporty cars than Chevy. Sure Cadillac has 2 but Ford shouldn't be in competition with Cadillac.

Chevy has 3 if you include the poor sales SS. Ford has the Focus ST, RS, Mustang, GT, and the Taurus SHO(if you want to include the SS). As a stretch you could even argue the Raptor.

Chevy is the one slacking in my opinion. The RS is going to have like 325 HP in a small car - same size as the 3. My 3 has 148 HP. So more than double. Chevy has 335 in the likely heavier Camaro 6 cylinder. What does Chevy have in the smaller car range that can even touch this?

I mean actual performance cars, not that FWD crap that you listed (FWD-based AWD doesn't count, either). The only thing Ford has is the Mustang, apparently.

GM has a full line Camaro and full line Corvette, and the SS, and that's just Chevrolet. Then there's the ATS and CTS for which Ford has no competitive offering, at all.

And as a reminder, the lowliest car here, the Camaro, was already better than the last gen Mustang, and the Mustang is all Ford had. See my point?

Also, the for the model years of 2011 to 2013 (the only thing I could get on Wiki), the Cruze did 717,714 in US sales. The Focus was 656,209. Not that far apart, but GM has been quite happy with Cruze sales, I'm sure.

And by the way, your precious Corolla did 833,386 in sales. The top 4 appear to be the Civic, Corolla, Cruze and Elantra. The Elantra did 636,307 in those 3 years. So much for your "everyone buys a Corolla and no one buys anything else even though it's boring" argument.

I'm sorry, was there interesting conversation going on here? I think I dozed off...

Right and the RS and SHO are not FWD and neither is the GT or the Raptor. As stated, Cadillac doesn't count as a Ford competitor.

So by numbers Ford has 5, GM has 3. Just because Ford is more diverse and has AWD sports cars doesn't mean that they don't exist.

It is too early to discredit the AWD system:
All-Wheel-Drive System
Featuring the new Ford performance All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring, the RS offers the next level in handling capability. To the performance enthusiast, Dynamic Torque Vectoring means maximum traction with minimum understeer. In other words, Focus RS offers stability, cornering speed and a high level of performance.

I know you aren't a fan but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

It looks like the most powerful engine you can get in a Cruz is a diesel?

I think we are officially off topic...

I hate to say it, but Ford probably has the best lineup of low to mid priced performance cars of any of the major manufacturers. The Fiesta ST is widely respected in its class as one of the best subcompact performance car in the US market. The Focus RS will be an STi and Golf R killer. The Focus ST is a solid offering in the class. The new Mustang is a pretty nice car on top of having good bang for the buck. Ford doesn't really have a lot at the top end of the spectrum the way GM does with the Cadillac V cars and the Corvette, but their low to mid range performance cars are very competitive in the class.

I guess I don't disagree and that WAS Bill's point, but I also don't think it really contradicts what I said, either. I think Bill's point was, any lacking in their product lineup is forgiven by an overall more diverse lineup. Or, to be really specific, a low- to mid-range lineup.

For me, I don't care about a domestic STi competitor. But I don't belong to a fraternity and wear my hat backwards or sideways, either.

Oh wait, I forgot about GM's entrant into the hot hatch segment.
