I think the move to high strength steel in the frame is the bigger deal (but obviously the aluminum body panels are getting the press - even Toomey mentioned it).

Remember also that the GM HD trucks were lighter than the Fords, rode better and handled better.

They also didn't need as many injectors and turbos as the HD Ford trucks (the diesels anyway).
