My Battery Tender fried

I bought this in 2010 knowing I wouldn't be driving my CTS-V in the winter. I have smelled a burning electrical smell for about 24 hours and when I went into the garage this morning to unload groceries, I noticed all the lights were off. And the garage smelled, too.

So I guess I will order another one. Lasted over 5 years. I guess that's good, considering it is microprocessor controlled.

Wait, there's a 10 year warranty! I will pursue this.

Goddamn.
In theory, the unit will do just that and perfectly. I owned two and was rather impressed until one day one of them caught fire and almost burned my house down. Fortunately I was home and caught it just as it was flaming up. If that was not bad enough, I contacted the company out of genuine concern and all customer service cared about was whether or not the unit was still under warranty. Well both units wound up in the garbage after that and I never looked back. If you want to use one, please do so at your own risk. When they work they are great, when they fail, NOT SO Great!
Maybe I will get in the habit of unplugging when going away. Or plugging in for a couple days and unplugging for a couple weeks. I should look closer to see if this one actually flamed out (literally). It didn't look like it. Just the magic smoke smell.

Have you considered switching to a battery desulfator instead? I've seen a decent-looking one for $49 on Amazon.. You could probably use it a couple of times a year to pep up the battery. It would also work for your in-use vehicles to extend battery life.

There are testimonials of these things fixing pretty bad old batteries. I'm sure you could get lots of entertainment out of that as well.

I don't know about "switching" to one, but having one of those, in addition to the Tender, would be nice. Though the idea with the Battery Tender is it avoids the sulfating in the first place.

I called Battery Tender/Deltran. Someone picked up, with no menu options even. I gave them the S/N and I am going to exercise the 10 year warranty. Sweet!

I got it back early this week and haven't taken it out of the box yet. I will this weekend. Curious if they gave me a new one or repaired it.
