I didn't know whether to put this in Cars or Tech...
I disagree that Apple will do for the car what they did for the smartphone. The most they can do for a car is somehow do automation better than someone else. I disagree that cars are where smartphones were before the iPhone.
I mean can they totally reinvent infotainment? In a way that Carplay already hasn't? The most convenient thing would be to not have to touch a button or take your eyes off the road. Or, in the extreme, never have to touch a vehicle control or look at the road...
That is probably the market pitch: In the world of self-driving cars, the differentiation will be industrial design. People will buy their iCars to show the world they have good design sense while getting from A to B. Except there is already a tremendous amount of competition here. In that sense, what they REALLY have to offer is a name and a badge. Snooze.
