The thing is, they have a rabid customer base. When GM fucked diesels up in the late 70s, early 80s, the customers were all too happy to move on to something else. How many VW people actually dislike their car? I think not many. It's not the same situation, since there is no specific reliability scandal here. VW was already unreliable
