And they will probably be happy about that.

It would be nice if that meant the bar to drive my own vehicle goes up, which means I have to demonstrate more skill at driving to maintain a license. On the other hand, all bad things that happen as a result of human error (or negligence) behind the wheel may have much steeper penalties than they do now (including speeding), since there will just be an option not to drive and still get where you need to go.
What enthusiasts wanted was an Autobahn. What we are getting is self-driving EV appliances. That is not the future I wanted.

That means going to a largely fleet-only sales model, which is probably not good for the auto industry. It will fully commoditize the parts of the industry where there are still profits. When you go to a taxi or Uber model, how much do you care if your transportation is happening in a Crown Vic, Prius or Camry? There will still be nice vehicles (and there will still be limousines) but they are a very small percentage. One day someone is predicting that the majority of cars in the U.S. will be electric, but still human-driven, and the next someone else is telling us most cars will be autonomous and won’t even be owned by those riding in them. The latest prediction posits that babies born today will never drive a car. Ever.
