I am having trouble with this one but...there is an available 1.6L turbo diesel. 137 hp and 240 lb-ft which is again like an early 80s LG4. On the other hand there are rumors that this will hit nearly 40 mpg highway. It won't be fast though.

Evidently Mazda will be doing a diesel in the new CX-5. When did this diesel resurgence happen?? Right before our eyes apparently. Maybe they all decided to spring into action when VW fucked up.

Mazda has been planning to bring diesel to the US for like the last 5 years (originally in the Mazda6, then the CX-5), but it keeps getting delayed. At this point, I'm not sure this will actually happen. It almost seems like it's not worth the risk for the low sales volumes and high potential of getting in trouble with the EPA.
