400 maintenance free hours doesn't sound like much, but maybe he's not talking about replacing all 36 apex seals every 400 hours? Who knows.
I really like the part about it being so smooth they can balance a glass of water on the engine. Most boats I've been on the motor shakes the whole thing and it's quite uncomfortable. That goes for the Yanmar diesel (obviously), the V8 (Chevy 350 I think), the volvo penta, and any outboard (obviously).
Interesting stuff on those destroyed rotaries. I guess I never really thought much about how rusty that iron rotor could get.

I'm not entirely convinced that the engine is 100% of the contributor for NVH on a boat. You have the exhaust which can create resonances, the drive system, prop, etc. Based on car experience, 90 degree V8s are fairly smooth...
