Wide popularity is always lowest common denominator.
It is usually the same with music. Most people don't want to hear someone just totally shred on guitar or any instrument, or care about odd time signatures, the majority want straight up rock 4/4 tempo and popular nice sounding chords, not complicated odd note pairings.
