Chevy LT1 Lifter issue/camshaft upgrade

Post by Adam »

So my Fleetwood has some cold running noise. It is probably top end noise from a slow to pump up lifter, although it might be something worse. Need to diagnose further. The question is, if it is a failed lifter do I just replace the lifter or replace all the lifters, or do a cam upgrade.

Comp has 7 grinds for the LT1. Two of these list as upgrades for an otherwise stock LT1.

Thoughts? I haven't looked at pricing for any of these things yet, but that will come into the equation later.

Also, I don't know the stock cam specs. I am sure they are on the internet.

There are many known good upgrades available. I don't know if there have been any new grinds in the last 10 years. Cam upgrade also requires valve springs, as I forgot to mention in the other thread. And you really need to open up the exhaust before you upgrade the cam.

Standard upgrade would also involve 1.6 roller rockers, which requires valve cover mods and I think an upgrade to the knock module to avoid false knock from the noisy rockers.

The Crane 227 cam comes to mind as a great street cam. Fast ramps, good torque (while adding top end of course).

You really want long tube headers also. Given the manifold leaks that may also be a useful upgrade path.

Let's see...F-body 3.5" MAF, possibly bigger TB (requires rework of trans calibration or else you'll fry it with lots more torque at smaller TPS values). 2.93 is also not ideal particularly with the stock converter. This shit adds up quick. Not that you have to do EVERYTHING at the same time, but you need a plan to sort of follow through on these items as you go.

If you want to rev above 6k you also need to do something with the opti. And above 6500 probably new rod bolts...

Oh, larger injectors and possibly a new fuel pump.

I know, why can't you just throw a cam in, rejet the carb and twist the dist a little bit? Because this will run 100x better than anything fitting that description.

Here are some of the known good choices:
cc503: (224/230 .537/.544 112lsa) w/ 1.6RR's

Crane 227: (210/224 .511/.553 112lsa) w/1.6RR's
-Downfall is "Sleeper" idle

GM846: (222/230 .543/.563 112lsa) w/ 1.6RR's

LPE 211/219: (211/219 .530/.560 112lsa) w/ 1.6RR's
-Downfall is "Sleeper " idle
Of these, I'd lean toward the 227 or LPE (that's Lingenfelter). The GM846 I guess is popular but seems fairly hot to me for what you may want. It would also be a waste without serious induction/exhaust upgrades, where the 227 and LPE will work better with more stockish stuff (induction, exhaust, torque converter and gearing, really).

B-body LT1 cam is
191/196 0.418/0.430 lift 111 LSA
Low lift but more aggressive than the low output 80s emissions small blocks.

1.6RRs, beehive valve springs, DIY CAI, and the Pypes exhaust with a little increase in shift RPM would probably be worth a few MPH in the 1/4, and a noticeable SOTP upgrade. And finally walk the Maxima :)

The small comp cam is:
206/212@.050 .480/.488 112 LSA.
The slightly bigger cam is:
210/220@.050 .500/.510 114 LSA
Both list as good for "stock LT1". I didn't realize the OEM cam was so small. These things must wake up pretty good with an upgrade.

AC Delco lifters are $30/ea through Rock Auto. Sealed Power is about $10/ea. I should see if any of the cam suppliers offer lifter sets.

Comp makes some good replacements. You don't want the R ones which are made for high rev applications (roughly half the hydraulic plunger displacement). Not necessary and more "fun" to keep quiet.

I think the Crane 227 or that LPE cam would be a good choice. They have pretty steep ramps and a lot of lift. The lift isn't really needed on untouched heads though.

F-body cam is a little hotter but not much.
202/207 0.450/0.460 lift 116 LSA
Extra duration but wider LSA which cancels some of that out. Now THIS is a real peanut cam. L03, reminiscent of the 80s emissions cams:
178/194 @ .050, .350"/.385", 109* lobe separation installed at 112* intake centerline
That lift is with 1.5 rockers.
