Stand-Up Comedy

Asking this from those that view it, if you had to rate the following on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the funniest thing you saw/heard and 1 being a complete non-laugh, how would you rate these:

I have a reason for asking this but in an attempt to conduct this experiment, i'll post my thoughts if people respond. If you don't, no worries.

First one about a 4. Meaning I definitely laughed at a few things but mostly not.

Second one was a 2 at best. It's one thing for me to watch a political show. It's another thing for the fucking TONIGHT SHOW (and apparently all similar media does this now) to make it a main staple. I am disappoint.

Ok, so I'm basically in total agreement for this particular comedian. The guy is a writer on SNL (first year was this past season and I'm assuming he got picked up for another year) and I just don't see how his comedy is that funny (or how SNL selected him to be a writer). He'll find 1 funny thing (in this case, being a gay vegan and saying he's sorry and not seeing any of his friends/family and just runs that joke into the ground). I've seen him do standup twice (he's friends with one of my wife's cousins who is also is a writer on SNL so in going to some of her shows, I've seen this guy as well) and both times I just was shaking my head and thinking that he's just not funny. Or at the very least, not my style or sense of humor (and I think when it comes to comedy, i'm pretty open). But yet, on these youtube videos, I see plenty of thumbs up and plenty of positive comments (although, to be fair, I've also seen plenty of negative comments). So I was just curious. It could be a generation thing as I've yet to conduct this experiment with some people I know (from work) that have just graduated from college. Although, I also wonder if making Trump jokes is just a cheap ploy to get the crowd to like you or laugh along.

Basically, when listening to Julio, I just think of this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRBtNwJhO6E

I'm not good at numbers.

I like the dry delivery, but in the Tonight Show clip some of the exchange felt a little forced.

I actually didn't get through either video because they weren't that funny... I felt bad and just didn't say anything at first, but his delivery is just not great...

I don't mind political jokes, and that wasn't even the problem for me. It just didn't do it for me. I have noticed a major decline in "funny" though on some of the shows like the new Daly Show, and some others. Just totally unoriginal. I do like the "new" Tonight show though. There are some really funny new pieces like the lip sync battles and letters.

Also, the new Dave Chappelle stand up on Netflix is absolutely priceless. There are 2. I am talking about the first one. The second is ok, but the first deserves some kind of an award. It is up there with some of his best in my opinion.

I do mind political jokes because 100% of them are targeted at a more left audience or should I say, not a right leaning audience. I have a problem with that. Otherwise I guess I wouldn't mind. These writers are using these shows as a platform and I think that is all garbage. Back in the day it was more light hearted jibing. I think it has gotten far more serious, with roots that I'd attribute to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. That format has taken off and again, I think it is all one sided stuff.

I thought the second piece lacked originality. Probably the best part was the Ted Cruz voiceover, but mostly because the original story was funny. Liking a porn video on twitter was probably the most human, relatable thing that that guy ever did.

Ok, thank you all for basically re-enforcing my opinion and that it wasn't just me. Then again, I do wonder if this type of humor is more hipster millennia and that audience on this board doesn't quite fit in to that crowd, :). And that's why we just "don't get it".

To me, it's interesting when I was reading through the youtube comments and some people were like "make him a cast member". I started discussing this with my wife and they told me that there could be a difference if Julio had to perform someone else's writing vs. him just writing.

Also, to further this discussion, i'll point out this NY Times article about Julio- https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/13/arts ... -sees.html

It's from January and you'll notice that he's using the vegan apology I miss being like joke, which the first time I heard him saying (over a year ago) was funny, but after a while, I think he's run the joke into the ground. But I bring up this article for a few reasons. One, we're all not finding Julio funny at all, but someone he gets a NY times article written about him which is clearly praising his work and the author must think he's hilarious. Two, some of the SNL sketches that are mentioned in the article, I flat out thought were bad (in some cases, the idea/concept had potential to be funny but to me the sketch fell flat). Now, maybe I'd argue that the author of the article was also a millennia but I think the author was born in 1975 or 1976, so clearly he's not. So, I just don't get how he thinks Julio is funny.

I guess I just needed some non bias opinions to bounce off of (since my wife's siblings already know I don't find Julio funny but wasn't sure if they were in real agreement with me or just going along). It's just when I see an article in the NY Times written about it and people liking the youtube videos of his standup, or even him getting on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, it's like, is this an the emperor is wearing no clothes moment and I'm the small child pointing it out while the rest of the world refuses to see the truth? I'll guess that Julio is a nice enough person but it's like if I see him at a random comedy show in NYC (although, with SNL soon to re-start, their schedule is nuts so I doubt he'll have the time really), I'm tempted to go up to him and just tell him that he needs a career change because funny he is not.

As for political jokes, that's something that is always going to happen. It just happens even more because of Trump and because of the way Trump acts and how many people really disagree with him on multiple levels. So it's easy and usually quite popular to take shots at him when you know the audience will get behind you, especially in markets like LA and NYC. To me, I don't personally mind the jokes because you have to know that typically these shows are going to cater to more of a liberal crowd and so you already know what you're getting into. Like, if you go to watch a certain news channel which is slanted one way or the other and expecting them to not cater to their target audience. But with Trump, I don't really see it as Rep vs. Dem, I think it's more of millions of Americans vs. Trump.
