This reminds me of my father in law's truck before he did some stuff. He had power steering, but an inline 6 and originally 3 on the tree. I understand a bare bones truck with an economical engine. I do not understand big block power but manual everything. That just sounds miserable. He says farm truck but you don't need a 390 for that. I don't understand.
Going further, I will have to say I think the 90s was an optimal combination of economy, power and reliability. You can say modern cars are complicated, and they are. But as you go back, I wouldn't want to go back further than about the 90s because I think things start to get worse again, even as they may become even more "simple." Like when you go back before electronic ignition. Points are clearly not better. 15k tune-ups (plugs, wires, points, cap, rotor, valve adjustment, etc.) are not better. Significant oil leaks before 100k isn't better. Bias ply tires are not better. I don't think carbs are better, either. Sure, there are good carbs that may be a better prospect than some notorious fuel injection systems but overall I'll take EFI every day of the week. It doesn't need to be direct injection, or have variable valve timing.
I think manual windows, no A/C, manual steering, no overdrive and bad radios are all bullshit. Really bad power to fuel economy ratios. Frankly the vehicles are less comfortable in many cases, too. I haven't even mentioned safety yet.
I think this guy did something cool to be driving this truck around. But it is not better.
