Free Devilbiss pressure washer

Post by kevm14 »

My neighbor who moved to Montana gave me his old Devilbiss Excell EXH2425.

It uses an older but same series Honda GC160 engine as my Ryobi pressure washer (except it's horizontal shaft). 2400 psi vs 2800 on my Ryobi and 2.4 gpm vs 2.3 on my Ryobi. Frankly I think the pump is higher quality but this is still a residential grade unit. Just better than today's residential grade because this one is like 19 years old. It uses a horizontal shaft engine which often means higher quality in any lawn type equipment. Also the pump says you should change the oil every so often. Wow, I don't think my Ryobi is serviceable. So I changed the oil. 8 oz of SAE 30 non-detergent.

The reported condition was this:
- Engine runs fine and is assessed as good condition
- The chemical injector fitting hose barb thing is half broken off and dumps a ton of spray any time the unit runs which....means it doesn't work too well as a pressure washer

I fixed that by removing the chemical injector entirely and getting a 3/8" MIP nipple and using that to couple the hose fitting to the pump body. That worked and fixed the leak. However this uncovered a new issue. It didn't make much pressure so I turned up the regulator. I figured the previous owner turned it down to avoid having all the pressure blow out the leaking injector body, or something like that. So I turned it up and it did in fact start making real pressure. This is good! However, when I let go of the trigger, it would dead head and load the engine. This isn't right. I texted him and he ended up calling me and confirmed that this was also an issue.

I believe something is wrong with the unloader which has a job to bypass when you let go of the trigger and let the pump recirculate. The part number seems to be 16355 but I can't find anything. The closest number I can find on eBay is 16030 but I need to take this one apart (it's at the bottom of the regulator) and see if I can find a visual match or something.

Some links and parts for the pump.

If I can find an unloader, I think this unit will be 100% functional. As it is, you would have to use it by never letting go of the trigger. That would be annoying. Plus I don't think you can turn up the pump regulator high enough because when I did so it would actually stall the engine when I let go of the trigger. Clearly not right to use like that.

As far as engine condition it appears to be pretty good. The oil seemed clean and without the nozzle on, the engine was able to idle down very smoothly. So I guess I have a possible horizontal shaft donor engine (5hp) for....activities?

Wow this site seems cool.

https://www.allpartsinc.com/unloader-as ... 16355.html
16355 UNLOADER ASSY OLD STYLE 1 PIECE
REFERENCE ITEM ONLY
Part Number: 16355
Brand: DeVilbiss Air Compressor and Equipment
This specific Equipment Model or Replacement Part is No Longer Available to Allparts Equipment but may be found from others online sources.
The 16355 Unloader is No Longer Available with no replacement as well as no other supplier for replacement parts or components to rebuild or repair the current unloader.

Respectfully we have this listing of the 16355 Unloader online as a Reference Item Only so customer can see the item and hopefully be able to disassemble and clean or repair their current unloader.

We cannot field calls on this item or answer emails as all of the information we have is on the page.

We can only suggest removing the unloader from your pump and disassemble to unloader and clean with a soft wire brush and some CLR to remove any corrosion.

We do not have sizes on the O-Rings and this information was never provided by the manufacture so we have no cross references.

We do not have any replacement parts or components.

We only have no further technical information and cannot field calls or emails on this component.
So step 1....take it apart. Maybe I can just clean it up and get it working again assuming nothing is actually broken. Zero parts required? Stay tuned.

Removed the unloader and even disassembled it. I think the plunger is moving the way it is supposed to. Put it back on the machine and tried it. No difference. Then I removed the check plate covers to inspect. Seemed....fine, too?

Tried it again. No difference. I do suspect the pump is not working 100%. I am not sure it's making the rated pressure but I could compare to my Ryobi to get a side by side. It should be about as strong. I have a feeling it's not. I wonder if one stage of the pump isn't working right because it seems to pulsate (like the hose pulsates) more than I'd expect. That also led me to wonder if having a bad stage on the pump could make the unloader not function properly. Kind of a mystery at this time.
