Turbo was "sticky" - sometimes hard to rotate and I believe failing to startup/spin sometimes. Randomly would spin and you could hear coastdown sometimes, but seemed like more often it was just "stuck".
I have turbo PN 2674A147. Interestingly, there are many cheapo chinese ebay turbos. I am worried about getting some of the crusted-in rusty fasteners out of the housing, but I'm very worried about the build quality and longevity of the Chinese turbos... It's possible that the manifold will cost me 2X what a whole new turbo does...
The manual I have linked below doesn't show my turbo pressure, but it looks like 16-22 psi was the range for the wastegated units. Maybe this makes more boost than I was thinking...

1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
So - disassembly was kinda crappy - turbine housing is crusty and 5/6 bolts broke (I think I sent you a pic). I also melted/busted the compressor wheel slightly - probably usable farm-only, but I'm not sure I really trust the balance since it's not "perfect". So, I think the best solution would be a Garrett cartridge for "cheap" if I could find one (<$300?), and an aftermarket turbine housing if I can find one. I doubt I'll find one stand-alone. I think I'm leaning slightly toward 3, but would like your opinion.
So then the options are:
1.) Cheapo complete assembly like this one ($280 w/ shipping, but it does include a 2-year warranty - assuming I "hear" something going wrong before I send aluminum bits through the intake - I suppose that could be mitigated with installing a boost gauge and keeping an "eye" on it - I believe I would see a drop off in boost before failure)
https://shop.phessio.com/product/ta3123 ... 16fd43adaa
2.) Complete Garrett assembly - this appears to be genuine Perkins which should be Garrett - $850:
https://satxsupply.com/products/2674a14 ... _VYTVtnExc
3.) Buy a genuine Garrett TA3123 with possibly different inlet/outlet housings and swap housings, or change inlet/outlet clocking ($521-$595 and I might have to drill out 5 rusted in bolt stubs in my old exhaust housing):
https://turboturbos.com/products/728001 ... I2EALw_wcB.
https://mydieselpro.com/product/728001- ... arger-new/
It's possible that this unit will fit-as-is. The exhaust housing appears to have the same 4-bolt flange and it's made for a 3" (external) v-band clamp, but my exhaust outlet is just "light-press-fit-in" into the bore, so the bore may be the same diameter. If so it might plug-and-play.
4.) Rebuild only and hope for the best - might be fine to slap back together as is. I've already proven the machine is completely operable sans-turbo, so some repair is better than no repair... Garrett T3 repair kits are $13 (aftermarket) - $85 (genuine, might find faster - summit has a 4-wk lead time).

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Hmmm...
Some aftermarket showing interchangeability for this one (appears to cross with Perkins 2674A076 vs. the "actual" listing for the removed turbo of 2674A147. Data tag from the turbo I removed attached below - removed unit was 466674-3, this one is 466674-5005 - I don't know what that means.
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 15eac5bcf5
Hopefully the Perkins dealer can tell me if ...A076 will interchange with ...A147.
For some reason the rough edges of the center section are sketching me out a little - could someone have bought a Chinese knock-off and put it in a Garrett box? I should ask for a label plate shot before I believe its genuine.

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
I messaged the facebook guy to see if he'll take a picture of the labelplate.
Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Some progress this morning.
Perkins dealer didn't know what was the difference between turbo PN's, said most/all should fit. I emailed Garrett to see if they can tell me the difference between the two PNs. Facebook guy hasn't messaged back yet.
Found a decent source I think for UK aftermarket JCB parts when I was searching using the PN that the Perkins dealer gave me this morning for the exhaust manifold - 3778H171. They had always been higher with shipping than the Ebay stuff, and I think may be the same sources.
Vicary Plant Spares
Shows a new exhaust manifold for 120 pounds, about $151.
Excel file attached with my latest price rack-out. I requested a shipping quote for everything in the spreadsheet in the Vicary column other than the turbo - we'll see what they come back with for shipping.

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
I'm somewhat surprised how shamelessly these guys try to appear to be genuine OEM parts. The picture on this Amazon listing is a Perkins image with the Perkins logo on the labelplate:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JM ... V1BC&psc=1
These guys used a clearly Garrett stock photo for the item description - sheesh.

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Ok - ordered manifold and misc parts from Vicary. Total was $258 with intake, turbo exhaust gaskets, studs and nuts (still need exhaust manifold-to-head gaskets and some misc studs).

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
I also emailed Area Diesel to see if they have any suggestions/PNs, etc.

Interesting that they also have a turbo adapter/custom accessory line:

Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Perkins turbo price from a MA dealer (Quality Fleet Service) is $963 - not quite as bad as I thought it would be...
Re: 1993 JCB 217S Turbo
Spoke with Area Diesel Service. They don't show availability for an exhaust housing anywhere. They said they can get a replacement compressor wheel and rebuild my turbo core. Shop rate is $120/$150 for them to rebuild the core and balance the rotating assembly. He thought with it disassembled it might be about 1 hour at the $150 "machine shop rate" and 0.5 hours at the assembly $120 rate. So something like $220 for labor, plus parts. I'd estimate a Garrett bearing kit at $100-150, and I didn't even ask what the compressor wheel was (assume $50-100?), which makes it $375, plus I really don't love my corroded out exhaust housing and the exhaust turbine would still have 5800 hours on it. The assessment of the tech I had on the phone was that I would be much, much better off with the new Perkins unit for $960, especially since he had no line on the appropriate turbine exhaust housing.
