Hopefully you don't need to install N71. And who knows if you even have the harness for it.

I guess I am wondering also if you should get lights that don't have that module/extra plug in them.

It definitely confirms that the module in the lamp assembly does control the ballast. Haven't been able to find headlight plug pinouts.

Definitely some good stuff in here. I also included a doc that explains how the fog lamp cornering system works.

Take a look at low beams actuation, function. Says it uses a discrete voltage. Perhaps a splice is required from the main harness into something on that extra plug so it knows to fire the xenon ballast.

And here is the block diagram for the old bixenons, up to November 30, 2004 production.

It does not have N71. Looks like the right headlamp control unit takes level sensor input directly. The reason is because this was just the original bixenon 614 before active curve illumination. So it was just doing level adjustments. Seems like they added the beam steering after that, and the calculations for that were now done with N71 (which also handles the beam level now, I assume). So the headlights you have are for the updated system.

The million dollar question is, does it need anything from N71 to fire the low beams? And is it just discrete or is there a data message? I hope it's the former.

I think these are the wiring diagrams that we need.

Looks like the unused connector is also 6 pins. Four of them seem to be for level sensor stuff. But two of them go to the front SAM.

Here is a 2009 CLK550 convertible VIN that does have 615: WDBTK72F79T104254

Front SAM: A2039060005

And that's the same as Adam's CLK.

This will be useful for SAM wiring diagrams. It shows the plug groups underneath.

Looks to me like front SAM plug group 24 pin 1 needs to be connected to headlamp plug group 2 pins 3. That may well be the data signal that says lights are on.
