• Generator connection steps (for loss of grid power OR a generator test):
- Shut off main breaker (consider adding a piece of tape)
- Shut off dryer breaker
- Consider shutting off other loads at the panel initially (optional but recommended - depends on what's plugged in all around your house and if it draws a lot of power, and would run automatically - if the house is cold at the time and you think both furnaces would run, shut off the less important one initially)
- Plug in generator on generator end and dryer plug end
- After basic checks (fuel/oil/placement for exhaust and cord routing), start generator and warm up for a minute or two, or more if it is very cold
- Turn on dryer breaker and monitor generator
- Turn on other breakers or loads as appropriate

• For refueling
- If possible, gracefully shut down furnaces by either waiting until thermostats are satisfied or turning both temps down and let it shut down gracefully
- Shut off dryer breaker
- Shut off any other breakers as selected above (optional but recommended)
- Shut off generator
- Refuel, check oil, visual wellness check, etc
- Restart generator
- Turn on dryer breaker
- Turn on other breakers or loads as appropriate

• For grid power restoration
- Shut off dryer breaker
- Shut off generator
- UNPLUG ALL GENERATOR CORDS on both ends
- Turn on main breaker
- Turn on all other breakers including dryer

These diagrams are illustrating the receptacle side which means the plug side is a mirror image. Of course this only matters for the NEMA 5.
